Itinerary

From parking to trail conditions, this itinerary has all the information you need to hike the Cherhill and Calstone Downs in Wiltshire.

Before you start

How to get there

The best way to get to the start point of the hike is by car. I started in the village of Calstone in a lay-by on the road running through the village.

Trail conditions

Most of the route around the Cherhill and Calstone Downs is made of chalky dirt trails which can get extremely muddy. On a dry day it’s pleasant to walk on.

Camping rules

The Cherhill and Calstone Downs is a National Trust site and rules may apply. Please contact the National trust before pitching. Wild camp at your own risk.

The hike

Step 1

Beginning the route

From the lay-by, continue to walk up the road eastbound towards the village.

Step 2

Turn right at the fork

At the fork, you’ll see the sign pointing to Wellington Barn. Turn right here and then take the next left into the fields towards the radio towers. Don’t park in here, it’s private property and the owner shuts the gates at 18:00.

Step 3

Climb the hill

Make your way up the hill to the first style, then turn left at the top along the dirt road.

Step 4

Continue along the dirt road

Follow the dirt road along the ridgeway and enjoy the views of the downs.

Step 5

Turn left at the Byway crossroads

Arrive at the crossroads sign and turn left towards the monument.

Step 6

The Lansdowne Monument

Arrive at the Lansdowne Monument and Cherhill White Horse. Enjoy views of the Cherhill and Calstone Downs before heading west back towards Calstone.

Step 7

Head west over the downs

Follow the trail westbound and pass the gate towards Calstone. Don’t head down the hill, you’ll end up on the A4. Stay on the hilltops until you reach the end.

Step 8

Enter the green tunnel

At the end of the hilltops, descend to the green tunnel and follow it to a crossroads.

Step 9

Turn left at the crossroads

Turn left at the crossroads to follow the equestrian route back to Calstone.

Step 10

Enter the woods

At the next trail marker, follow the small, muddy path down into the woods.

Step 11

Back to civilisation

The muddy path turns back into a tarmac road. This marks the return point back into Calstone.

Step 12

End back at the Wellington Barn fork

Continue through Calstone, staying on the road walk until you make your way back to the sign turning right to the Wellington Barn.
