Itinerary

From parking to trail conditions, this itinerary has all the information you need to hike from Kimmeridge Bay to White Nothe on the South West Coastal Path.

Before you start

How to get there

The best way to get to Kimmeridge Bay is by car. The car park is on the Kimmeridge Toll Road and there’s a £5 all-day parking fee. Gates close at 22:00.

Trail conditions

Most of the route between Kimmeridge Bay and White Nothe is trodden paths over grassy cliffside hills.

Military ranges

This section of the SWCP includes Tyneham Village firing range and is sometimes closed for military use. Don’t forget to check the opening times below.

The hike

Step 1

Beginning the route

From the car park, head west down the coast following the path to the pumping station. This is where the gate into the firing range could be closed. Be sure to check opening times below.

Step 2

Hug the coastline over the cliffs

Continue up over the cliffs keeping within the yellow markers which have been placed there for your safety due to unexploded shells. Onward to the west you’ll see Warbarrow Bay over the summit of the first set of hills.

Step 3

Warbarrow Bay

Walk past the bay and summit the next hill. Over the hill you’ll come across the military tanks peppering the fields beyond.

Step 4

Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door

Continue along the SWCP until you reach the end of the military firing range. You’ll see Lulworth Cove to your left and Durdle Door over the next hill past the main car park.

Step 5

White Nothe Obelisk

A few more hills over cliffs await you until you reach the White Nothe Obelisk. Enjoy the views and take it slow. You’re almost at the point at which I turned back on the path at around 10 miles in.

Step 6

White Nothe Coastguard Cottages

The end of the hike before I turned back is marked by the White Nothe Coastguard Cottages and pill box out towards the edge of the cliffs. Enjoy the view of Portland Island out to sea and take a break if it’s not too windy before heading back.
